New Zealand's first Governor, William Hobson, esignated Auckland as the capital of the colony in 1841, utilizing land provided by Ngāti Whātua. Despite the relocation of the capital to Wellington in 1865, Auckland retained its significance as a key entry point to New Zealand and evolved into a thriving port metropolis. Auckland's expansive, sparsely populated suburbs have historically been a preferred residential destination for international migrants, establishing the city as the largest urban hub in the country.
